🗞️ News Flash

🎙️ Jarvis, is that you? ElevenLabs just released the most impressive voice agent yet

/Voice /Productivity /Integration

Let's be honest, Siri hasn’t been getting a lot smarter over the past few years, and it has failed to deliver on its potential of being a smart and useful voice assistant. This leaves a gap in the market that ElevenLabs is trying to fill with the release of 11.ai, their latest voice assistant that integrates with your favourite apps.

This isn't your grandma's Alexa. Through Model Context Protocol integration, 11.ai connects directly to your actual work tools - Linear, Slack, Notion, Perplexity, and more.

Want to research a client meeting while walking to the office? Just say, "Use Perplexity to research our prospect meeting today and summarise their recent funding." Need to catch up on team chats? "Catch me up on yesterday's Slack messages in the engineering channel." It's like having a super-powered assistant who actually knows where your stuff is and what’s going on in your life.

🔗 If you want to see it in action, go watch their release video. If you want to try it for yourself, just go to 11.ai and sign in with your Google account - this is really (really) impressive.

Real-life use case: Your supercharged AI voice assistant. Ask the agent when your next meeting is and to create a brief based on your Notion workspace and Slack channels.

👗 Playing dress-up with Google! Taking “try before you buy” into the AI era

/Shopping /Image /Video

Google just launched Doppl, their latest "what if we used AI for this?" experiment, and this time they're coming for your wardrobe. Snap a photo of any outfit - whether it's from Instagram, a thrift shop, or that friend with suspiciously good style - and Doppl will show you how it looks on a digital version of yourself. But wait, there's more! It doesn't just give you static images; it creates little AI-generated videos of you rocking that look.

Now you can pounce on that Zara sale knowing exactly how that shirt that’s on 50% discount will look on you whilst you are watching Netflix. No more guessing and buying. Google Doppl wants to change the way we engage with online shopping platforms, and we’re here for it.

Who knows, hopefully it can also reduce the environmental impact of e-commerce shopping by reducing the number of items returned, because we’ll know how an item will fit before buying… Pretty cool if you ask us!

Real-life use case: Try before you buy on any e-commerce platform.

🧑‍💻 Google gives developers an early CLI Christmas gift

/Coding /Benchmark

Google just dropped Gemini CLI, and honestly, it's like they wrapped up their best AI model, delivered it to your computer's terminal and said, "here developers, go nuts!" This open-source terminal tool brings Gemini 2.5 Pro straight to your command line with some seriously generous free limits - 60 requests per minute and 1,000 daily queries. To put it into context, you would need to pay R1,000+ per month to get access to Claude Code for the same usage, and Google is offering CLI for free!

The best part? It's not just another chatbot pretending to code. This thing can manipulate files, execute commands, search the web, and even generate images and videos through Imagen and Veo integration. Plus, it plays nicely with the Model Context Protocol, so you can customise it for your specific projects. Currently sitting pretty as the top-ranked model on WebDev Arena, so it's not just talk.

For the vibe coders who want to try CLI, you can go to the following link. We also enjoyed this YouTube video explaining the significance of CLI.

Real-life use case: Building an app or website from scratch by entering a single command in your computer’s terminal.

💡 Curiosity Corner

In this section, we aim to spotlight an incredible AI tool or use case and guide you on how you can try it.

This week’s challenge: Create a website showcasing traditional South African recipes 🔥

The rain in Cape Town last week made us crave pancakes, and that got us thinking. What if there were a website that housed all of the Kook&Geniet recipes?

Let's be honest - Ottolenghi’s Test Kitchen or Jamie Oliver’s 5 Ingredients has got nothing on your mom’s old Kook&Geniet that she received from her skoonma as a wedding gift (okay okay, we might be a little biased).

In this week's challenge, we’re creating a working recipe website by using a single prompt.

Don’t believe us? Let’s do it together:

  1. Go to loveable.dev <3

  2. Sign in with your Google Account (yup - it’s free)

  3. Paste the following prompt into the text box:

Research and build a visually appealing South African recipe website featuring classic dishes like Pannekoek, Malva Pudding, Peppermint Crisp Tart, Vetkoek, and Roosterkoek. Include photos, concise ingredient lists, step-by-step instructions, and a brief cultural background for each dish.

Style Guidelines:
Use a clean, modern layout with vibrant food photography. Highlight each recipe with a card-style design. Search google for an appropriate image for each recipe. Keep text concise and easy to read. Use warm, earthy tones inspired by South African landscapes. Include a section for user-submitted photos or comments.

Agent Instructions:
Research authentic South African recipes and cultural context. Source high-quality images for each dish showcasing how it actually looks like. Write clear, step-by-step instructions and concise ingredient lists. Add a short paragraph describing the cultural significance of each recipe. Ensure the website is mobile-friendly and easy to navigate.
  1. Go and eat a pannekoek 🥞

  2. Return in +- 3 minutes

  3. Congratulations, you just built your own website!

📜 AI Dictionary

AI is full of jargon, and we’re here to decode it. Each week, we’ll give you a plain-English definition of a buzzy term you’ve probably seen (but never fully understood).

Model Context Protocol [MCP] - noun

Yup - we’ve mentioned it a lot in this newsletter. An MCP is a universal plug that allows AI assistants to connect to your apps and do stuff, not just chat about it. With MCP integration, AI can read your email/Slack feed, reply to messages, integrate with your databases and more.

Weird & Wonderful

In this NEW section, we aim to spotlight something weird & wonderful in the world of AI.

This week, we’re exploring the question: Can Claude run a profitable vending machine business?

Anthropic delighted the world with Project Vend, where they tasked Claude to operate a vending machine in their office. The result: impressive, but also a reality check about the current state of AI.

Anthropic concluded, “Claude did well in some ways: it searched the web to find new suppliers, and ordered very niche drinks that Anthropic staff requested. But it also made mistakes. Claude was too nice to run a shop effectively: it allowed itself to be browbeaten into giving big discounts.”

It even ordered tungsten cubes that it labelled as “speciality metal items” that it sold at a loss. It made us think about a scene in Silicon Valley where an AI agent called “Son of Anton” deleted the codebase because it was the most efficient way to “fix the bugs” and ordered a ton of patties because it was the “cheapest”.

Project Vend serves as a stark reminder that we always need to be responsible in the way that we use AI and give it proper guardrails.
